I suppose, if anything, it's more that I'm set on getting a full-time position somewhere before I think about writing a full-length piece and marketing it to publishing houses. Working inside the publishing industry might actually shorten that somewhat, when I think about it.

To be honest, I enjoyed my degree, and I'm glad I learned so much from it. That being said, had I gone back I'd either re-do it and my A-levels and go to a better university, or I'd simply jump right into journalism. Beginning to lean into other aspects of writing and communication, PR for example, so it'll be interesting to see how my life plays out with only eleven days until I'm 21.

If you want to go back, Serge, I say go for it, a lot of people are, especially due to the huge numbers of people skill-transferring into other career paths due to the current economic climate. Follow your dreams, methinks, as waking up is sometimes a lot more unpleasant than drifting along in a place of enjoyment.

If you don't mind me asking, why competitions and not direct submissions in the market?

I thought I had it all figured out - the career I mean - until I graduated. You know how they (the teachers) always said that with a degree the world is your oyster? They lied to us :) Anyway, if I go back to uni it would most likely be to study BSc Aerospace or Aeronautical Engineering but that would mean by the time I graduate (again) I'll be 30. I had this idea about doing a degree in English because I love reading and writing but careerwise the other option looks more suitable (and safe) for me. Yeah, I know what you mean, I wish I had a second go at my degree, I would have certainly done some things differently.

Well, two short story competitions and a novel I'm working on currently, though it'll be interesting to see if either actually go anywhere, mainly because I'd rather make more than less over my lifetime.

If you want to go back though dude, I'm all for it, to be honest, I wish I was going back to my first year come this October, I feel like I wasted a degree even though I learnt a shedload of stuff. What do you feel like doing in the way of a career?

I hope you get the upper second, mate, but even if you don't it's not the end.

Short stories or long fiction? Have you ever read the "Interzone" magazine by any chance? Sounds like you got a nice present for your birthday, congrats on the sell! :D

I'm same as usual..well sort of. Having some thoughts about going back to college and doing another degree and also wondering whether I'm crazy to even be considering something like that. Haha!

I was supposed to get my results aaaaages back, but for some sick reason they're not sending them yet, though I'll imagine it's a few percent away from a 2.1, hilariously.

As for fiction, sci-fi mainly as that seems to be my one and only strongpoint. I've had a ton of dental work recently and some stuff IRL, so at the moment freelancing's taken a backseat, though my first ridiculously well-paid piece goes up the week I turn twenty-one, which is awesome.

How's things with you, Serge old pal?

How is it going? When do you get your exam/degree results? What kind of fiction btw?

Christos. Nice to see you're keeping busy!

Some contact would be nice at some point, this seems to be the only way I can get through to you.

Haven't spoken to you since I gave you that lift to Lex's at 4 in the morning that time.

All the best,
Stefano
